Top 5 Call of Duty headsets reviewed

Turtle Beach Call of Duty Headset

Key features:

  • Additional Features: Dolby Surround Sound
  • Connector TypeL USB (4 pin USB Type A), Digital audio input (optical) (TOSLINK), Digital audio output (optical) (TOSLINK)
  • Sound Output Mode: Stereo
  • Frequency Response: 20 Hz
  • Mic type: Detachable
  • Transmission Range: 30 ft
  • Battery: Rechargeable lithium polymer battery

Sound quality

The Turtle Beach headsets produce the COD sound really well. With the default settings, things are quite balanced, but when you turn up the bass boost, the explosions start getting louder. With bass boost up, gunfights become much more imposing.

However, if you turn it up to the max, you risk blocking out other quieter sounds. It becomes easier to sneak up on you from behind. These headphones only give stereo sound, but with a wide soundstage. No virtual surround.

Microphone

The microphone is non-detachable, but it is well placed so it doesn’t block our face. The amount of ambient noise you’ll have depends on how well you place the mic. The mic itself does not give any noise cancellation.

Features

This headset’s cable setup can be a little tricky because it has both the 3.5mm and USB connections. The 3.5mm port is for the earcups while the USB port is for the mic and to power the headphones. It works fine with PC, Xbox, and PS4.

If you’re using the headphones with a console, the USB goes into the console while the 3.5mm goes to your TV.

You can use the 3.5mm to RCA splitter cable if your TV has just the RCA outputs. The controls are on the headset’s in-line remote.

You can adjust the volumes of chat and game audio separately. It’s easily accessible and prevents you from getting killed while adjusting volumes.

What do we like?

  • Easy headphone control
  • Bass boost makes the action feel more intense

What we don’t like?

  • Complex cable setup
  • No surround sound

ASTRO Gaming A50 Wireless Dolby Gaming Headset

Key features:

  • Microphone: 6.0mm uni-directional, voice isolating
  • Drivers: 40mm Neodymium Magnet
  • Wireless: Up to 30ft
  • Standby Battery Life: ~ 20 months
  • Wireless Frequency: 2.4GHz
  • Battery Type – Lithium Polymer, single-cell
  • Battery Life: 15 hours
  • Mic type: Nondetachable

Sound quality

The A50 has an impressive bass quality that does not go overboard. Gunfights and explosions are loud and punchy, but you can still hear other details.

Voices, footsteps, and even soft movements from some distance are audible. The headset has a Dolby surround sound feature that emulates a 3D soundscape.

It’s not as immersive as an actual surround sound, but it’s slightly better than stereo. To be more accurate, it’s like a stereo with a wider, more detailed soundstage.

Mic

ASTRO Gaming A50 headset with mic

The mic is nondetachable, which makes the headphones a little awkward for non-gaming use.

In terms of sound quality, it’s what we expect from most gaming headsets – less bass and emphasis on vocal clarity.

Gamers with deeper voices may feel weird listening to themselves on this. Their voices will sound lighter. Also, you need to speak up because the mics are not so loud.

Features

Though the headphones are wireless, you need the base station to make it function.

The base station houses the micro USB and optical audio ports. The micro USB charges the headset and can be used to connect to your PC or Xbox.

To use these cans with the PS4, use the optical port.

The control buttons are on the earcups. They enable Also, you can mute the mic by simply flipping it up.

What do we like?

  • Dolby surround sound gives wider soundstage
  • The wireless base station makes it compatible with both PC and consoles.

What we don’t like?

  • Base station makes the whole unit quite bulky
  • The mic is quiet.

SteelSeries Arctis Pro

Key features:

  • Microphone Type: Retractable Boom
  • Microphone Polar Pattern: Bidirectional Noise-Canceling
  • Microphone Frequency Response: 100–10,000 Hz
  • Neodymium Drivers: 40 mm
  • Headphone Frequency Response: 10–40,000 Hz
  • Platform Support: Windows 7+, Mac OS X 10.9+ (DTS Headphone:X available on Windows 7+ only)

Sound quality

The virtual surround sound in the Arctis Pro makes the COD soundstage quite immersive. It’s not 100% accurate in terms of 3D sound location, but it does make the game sound better.

The gunfights have just enough bass punch for the thrill of the battlefield. The low-frequency sound is punchy, but not boomy, so you can still hear other elements clearly.

You need those quieter sounds, especially in the multiplayer warzone. You don’t want other players sneaking in on you.

Mic

SteelSeries Arctis Pro Headset Compatibility

The mic is non-detachable but you can retract it into the earcup when you’re not using it. It makes the headphones suitable for non-COD use.

The mic sounds rich, with more detail than the average gaming mic. There’s a lot of clarity in the chats, but a lot of body also. Your deep voice doesn’t sound weird here. However, you need to control the ambient nose. External sounds can easily get in the mic.

Features

To connect the Arctis Pro to your PC or console, you need to use the transmitter. The transmitter connects wirelessly to the headphones while you connect your console and PC to the transmitter. Connect via USB to your PC and via optical cable to your PS4 or Xbox.

This headset is compatible with PC, PlayStation, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Mobile.

SteelSeries Arctis Pro with various features

You can use the headset’s bluetooth connection and transmitter at the same time. This means that you can connect your phone and console to the headset. You don’t have to pause the game or get killed just because you have to answer a call

What do we like?

  • Multiple connection options.
  • Good sound positioning with virtual surround.

What we don’t like?

  • Can’t work with consoles or TVs without optical audio or USB audio ports.
  • The mic captures ambient noise.

HyperX Cloud Alpha

Key features:

  • Driver: Custom dynamic, 50mm with neodymium magnets
  • Type: Circumaural, closed-back
  • Mic Element: Electret condenser microphone
  • Polar pattern: Noise-cancelling
  • Frequency response (Mic): 50Hz-18,000Hz
  • Connection: Detachable headset cable – 3.5mm plug (4 pole) + PC extension cable – 3.5mm stereo and mic plugs

Sound quality

The Cloud Alpha sound starts with its excellent sound isolation. Although it doesn’t have active noise cancellation, the headset’s build makes it keep out most ambient noise.

When there’s less interference from outside, you can hear your headphones more clearly.

Getting to the main part; the low frequencies have enough heft to make the COD gunfights a thrilling experience. The explosions sound heavy, but not so much that they block other quieter sounds. It’s a good balance of frequency response.

Mic

HyperX Cloud Alpha mic

The mic is detachable, so you can use the headphones for other stuff aside from gaming. With the mic attached, the chat is crisp and clear, and the mic rejects most background noise. Once you get the positioning right, your teammates will hear you clearly.

Features

The Cloud Alpha uses wired connection only. The cable is a detachable 3.5mm cord. You can use these headphones for COD on your PC or console.

The major benefit of wired headphones is the absence of latency or lagging. If you play COD with headphones that have considerable latency, it’s a disaster waiting to happen.

All controls on these headphones are on the in-line remote. It allows you to adjust the headset volume and switch on/off the mic.

What do we like?

  • Zero-latency
  • Works with all consoles and PC.

What we don’t like?

  • No surround sound

Corsair HS50 Pro

Key features:

  • Platform compatibility: PC, PS4, XBOX One, Nintendo Switch, Mobile devices
  • Microphone Type: Unidirectional noise canceling
  • Microphone Frequency Response: 100Hz to 10kHz
  • Headphone Type: Wired
  • Headphone Drivers: 50mm
  • Cable Length: 1.8m

Sound quality

Like most other COD headphones, the Corsair HS50 pro gives thunderous bass and crisp treble.

The bass is just enough to impress you with its heft and not mask the other frequencies. The soundstage is as wide as you can get with a pair of stereo headsets. There’s no virtual surround sound feature.

Mic

Corsair HS50 Pro with detachable mic

The microphone is detachable, so you need to be careful not to misplace it. The guys at the other end will hear you clearly.

If you use game chatting services like Discord, the HS50 pro works fine with them. If you place the mic well and your room is not too noisy, your teammates should hear you clearly.

Features

Whether you play COD on your PS4, Xbox or PC, the HS50 pro works just fine. Even if you play the mobile version on your phone, all you need to do is plug in the 3.5mm jack and you’re good to go.

The available controls include volume adjustment and mic switch. There’s no volume adjustment control for the mic, so you can’t control the chat level separately.

What do we like?

  • Can be used for other purposes aside from gaming
  • Compatible with Discord and other game chat apps.

What we don’t like?

  • The mic can easily get missing when detached.
  • No surround sound

Conclusion

Of all these 5 best headphones, my favorites are Arctis Pro, HyperX Cloud Alpha, and Astro A50.

The Steelseries Arctis Pro and Astro A50 have the simulated surround sound feature. Even though it’s not as immersive as the actual surround, it’s better than stereo.

I also like the HyperX Cloud Alpha because of its excellent sound isolation. The sound that comes from the ear cups is free of any interference. It improves the overall sound quality of the headphones.
